Video on how to irrigate the bladder using a three-way catheter
Triple-lumen catheters are specialized urinary catheters used in urology, suitable for patients requiring bladder irrigation. Bladder irrigation must be performed by trained professionals. The specific procedure is as follows:
1. After the patient enters the treatment room, they should lie in a supine position. The physician disinfects their hands and puts on sterile gloves, then performs routine disinfection of the patient's urethral area.
2. The physician locates the external urethral orifice, selects an appropriately sized catheter, applies sterile liquid paraffin to the tip of the catheter, and gently inserts the catheter into the urethra.
3. After insertion, gentle pressure is applied to the lower abdomen. When urine appears in the catheter, this indicates that the catheter has entered the bladder. At this point, 5 ml of normal saline is injected through the first lumen to inflate the balloon and secure the catheter in place.
4. Approximately 200 ml of sterile normal saline or another irrigation solution is introduced through the third lumen; the fluid will then drain out through the middle lumen.
Sterile technique must be strictly maintained when using a triple-lumen catheter to prevent urinary tract infections.
