Subcutaneous injection methods and sites for the arm
Subcutaneous injection in the arm generally refers to a method of administering biologics or small volumes of medication into the tissue beneath the skin. It is typically used for low-dose medications. The main steps of the procedure include verifying the medication, drawing up the drug, disinfecting the injection site, and administering the injection. The injection site is usually located at the lower edge of the deltoid muscle in the upper arm. The specific steps are as follows:
1. Before performing the subcutaneous injection, carefully verify the name of the medication and check whether it is damaged or degraded. If any such issues are found, do not proceed with the injection.
2. After confirming that the medication is intact and suitable for use, disinfect the cap of the medication vial, draw the medication into the syringe, and expel all air from the syringe.
3. Disinfect the intended injection site. Then, stretch the skin taut with your left hand, hold the syringe with your right hand, and insert the needle into the subcutaneous tissue at an angle of 30–40 degrees. Be careful not to insert the entire needle to avoid breakage.
4. Aspirate slightly to ensure there is no blood return before injecting the medication. Administer the drug slowly to facilitate proper absorption.
5. Withdraw the needle and apply a cotton swab to the injection site to stop bleeding. Dispose of the cotton swab only after bleeding has completely stopped.
All procedures must strictly follow aseptic techniques. It is recommended that injections be performed under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional.
