Are facial neuritis and facial paralysis the same condition?

Introduction
In general, facial neuritis and facial paralysis are not the same condition. Facial neuritis is an acute, non-suppurative inflammation of the intracanalicular segment of the facial nerve within the facial canal. Facial paralysis refers to a disorder characterized by loss of muscle movement and paralysis of the facial expression muscles. Peripheral facial paralysis may be caused by facial neuritis, whereas central facial paralysis may result from cerebrovascular diseases.

Generally speaking, facial neuritis and facial paralysis are not the same condition. The specific analysis is as follows:

Facial neuritis is an acute non-suppurative inflammation affecting the intracanalicular segment of the facial nerve. It may be caused by viral infection, poisoning, tumor compression, exposure to cold wind on the face, or other reasons. Patients may experience symptoms such as loss of forehead wrinkles, inability to frown, incomplete eyelid closure, and shallower nasolabial folds on the affected side.

Facial paralysis is a disease characterized by loss of motor function in the facial muscles, leading to facial expression muscle paralysis. It may result from intracranial lesions, inflammatory or infectious conditions, compression of the facial nerve blood vessels, ear-related diseases, or neurogenic injuries. Symptoms may include disappearance of forehead wrinkles on one side, difficulty closing the eyes, shallow nasolabial folds, and mouth deviation.

Facial paralysis can be classified into peripheral facial paralysis and central facial paralysis. Peripheral facial paralysis may be caused by facial neuritis, whereas central facial paralysis is often due to cerebrovascular diseases. Therefore, facial neuritis and facial paralysis are not identical conditions.
