Introduction
What Causes Itching in the Palms? 1. Hand eczema—typically accompanied by itching. 2. Fungal infection—can cause skin lesions on the hands. 3. Blood heat—resulting from excessive internal “fire” (a TCM concept referring to hyperactivity of yang or inflammatory conditions). 4. Dyshidrotic eczema—a type of allergic dermatitis; particularly common in summer when excessive sweating impairs normal sweat excretion.

Itching of the palms is a manifestation of pruritus (skin itching). In daily life, many individuals experience palm itching, which can significantly impair normal work and daily activities. There are numerous potential causes for palm itching—such as fungal infection of the hands—or other underlying factors. So, what exactly causes palm itching? Below, we address this question in detail.

Causes of Palm Itching

1. Hand Eczema

Palm itching may result from hand eczema—a relatively common allergic dermatosis clinically. Patients typically present with papules and erythematous plaques on the hands, often accompanied by intense pruritus. The lesions usually lack well-defined borders and appear brownish-red; in some cases, dryness and fissuring may also occur. Patients are advised to promptly take antihistamines or other anti-allergic medications to alleviate the itching.

2. Fungal Infection

Palm itching may be caused by fungal infection. When fungi infect the skin of the hands, they induce cutaneous lesions that provoke itching—particularly in the palms—and such infections are potentially contagious. Therefore, patients should maintain rigorous hand hygiene and apply topical antifungal agents to relieve palm itching.

3. Blood Heat

Palm itching may stem from “blood heat,” a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) concept referring to excessive internal heat or “deficiency fire” within the body. Emotional fluctuations—such as stress, anxiety, or mood instability—may also contribute to blood heat. Thus, maintaining emotional balance and psychological well-being is essential for prevention. Additionally, insect bites can cause localized palm itching; applying topical anti-itch ointments to the affected area is recommended for symptomatic relief.

4. Dyshidrotic Eczema (Pompholyx)

Palm itching may arise from dyshidrotic eczema—an allergic inflammatory skin condition. During hot, humid weather—especially in summer—excessive sweating combined with impaired sweat excretion can lead to sweat retention within the epidermal stratum corneum, triggering dyshidrotic eczema and subsequent palm itching. Key contributing factors include psychological stressors such as anxiety, fatigue, or depression. Moreover, contact with certain metals or skin-irritating substances—including frequent exposure to soaps, detergents, or laundry powders—can also precipitate dyshidrotic eczema and associated palm itching.

The above outlines the primary causes of palm itching. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
