Introduction
Bruising after an intramuscular injection may result from local capillary rupture, insufficient compression time leading to unclotted blood, and subsequent subcutaneous hematoma. This is often accompanied by abnormal symptoms such as pain and swelling. It could also be caused by the medication leaking into surrounding tissues during the injection, causing irritation and resulting in blood stasis. In most cases, the condition can be improved through local massage and warm compresses to promote blood circulation.

Bruising after an intramuscular injection may be caused by capillary rupture or drug irritation.

1. Capillary Rupture

The injection may cause local capillaries to rupture. If the injection site is not pressed long enough for blood to clot, it can lead to subcutaneous bleeding and bruising, which may be accompanied by pain, swelling, or other abnormalities.

2. Drug Irritation

During injection, the medication may leak into surrounding tissues, causing irritation and resulting in blood stasis and bruising.

After such bruising occurs, local massage or warm compresses can generally help improve blood circulation, promoting the dissipation or absorption of the bruise. Additionally, if frequent injections are necessary, it is advisable to rotate injection sites to prevent worsening symptoms.
