Introduction
Older adults should sleep on a relatively firm mattress. As age increases, bodily functions deteriorate, making individuals more prone to symptoms such as back and leg pain. A firmer mattress provides better support for the body, reduces pressure on the lumbar spine and cervical vertebrae, improves sleep quality, and promotes overall health. Sleeping on a mattress that is too soft may disrupt the spine's natural physiological curvature, leading to discomfort in the lower back.

Generally, it is better for older adults to sleep on a firmer bed rather than a soft mattress, as this can help reduce pressure on the lumbar spine and improve sleep quality to some extent.

As people age, their bodily functions gradually decline, and the spine may experience some degree of degeneration. Conditions such as osteoporosis, lower back and leg pain become more common. Choosing a firm mattress or board-like bed avoids placing excessive strain on the cervical and lumbar vertebrae, provides better body support when getting up, reduces stress on the neck and lower back, and thereby helps improve sleep quality and supports overall health. Sleeping on an overly soft bed, by contrast, may disrupt the natural physiological curvature of the lumbar spine, potentially leading to muscle and ligament tension or spasms in the lower back, causing discomfort or contributing to lumbar spine disorders.

In daily life, older adults should maintain a balanced diet and engage in appropriate physical activity. If symptoms of back discomfort occur, they should seek medical attention promptly.
