What should I do if my internal fistula is blocked?

Introduction
Treatment for a blocked arteriovenous fistula depends on the underlying cause. If caused by fistula stenosis, treatment includes balloon angioplasty or traditional surgical excision. If due to inadequate dialysis, your doctor may recommend creating a new fistula or using catheter-based dialysis to prevent recurrence. For blockages caused by thrombosis, fistula reconstruction or surgical thrombectomy is performed. In cases where recurrent hypotension during dialysis is the cause, symptoms can be alleviated by reducing blood flow rate or stopping ultrafiltration.

The treatment for a blocked arteriovenous fistula (AV fistula) should be based on the underlying cause, such as fistula stenosis, inadequate dialysis, or thrombosis. A targeted treatment plan should then be implemented under medical guidance.

1. Fistula Stenosis

If the narrowing is due to congenital vascular malformation at the fistula site, treatment under a doctor's supervision may include balloon angioplasty or traditional surgical excision, which typically improves symptoms.

2. Inadequate Dialysis

If inadequate dialysis results from failure to control fluid intake during dialysis, follow medical advice to undergo re-creation of the fistula or catheter-based dialysis to continue treatment and prevent worsening symptoms.

3. Thrombosis Formation

If a clot forms due to high blood coagulability during dialysis, treatment under medical guidance may involve fistula reconstruction or surgical thrombectomy.

In addition, recurrent hypotension during dialysis may also contribute to complications. Prompt medical attention is necessary, and symptoms can be alleviated under a physician’s direction by reducing blood flow rate or stopping ultrafiltration.
