What does bypass surgery mean?
Bypass surgery generally refers to coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). This surgical procedure is commonly used to treat coronary artery blockage or narrowing by improving blood supply to the heart muscle.
The procedure creates a new pathway for blood flow around blocked or partially blocked arteries in the heart, thereby improving hemodynamic conditions and blood flow to the myocardium. During the operation, a healthy blood vessel is harvested from the chest or leg and connected below the obstructed coronary artery. Indications for this surgery include coronary atherosclerotic heart disease, acute coronary syndrome, coronary artery dissection, and similar conditions.
Individuals with such underlying medical histories and progressively worsening conditions should seek in-person consultation and evaluation at the appropriate department of a hospital, and consider whether surgical intervention is necessary based on clinical assessment and physician recommendations.
