Introduction
In general, waking up in the morning with a dry and stiff tongue may be related to dietary factors, yin deficiency with excessive internal heat, excessive liver fire, wind-heat感冒 (common cold), hyperthyroidism, or other causes. Patients are advised to follow medical guidance for symptomatic treatment. Consuming overly greasy or spicy and irritating foods at night, drinking insufficient water, or breathing through the mouth may lead to excessive evaporation of moisture in the oral cavity.

Generally, waking up in the morning with a dry and stiff tongue may be related to factors such as diet, yin deficiency with hyperactivity of fire, excessive liver fire, wind-heat感冒 (common cold), or hyperthyroidism. Patients are advised to seek appropriate medical treatment under a doctor's guidance. Specific analyses are as follows:

1. Diet

Consuming excessively greasy or spicy, irritating foods at night, drinking insufficient water, or breathing through the mouth may lead to excessive evaporation of moisture in the oral cavity, resulting in a dry and stiff tongue. This is considered a normal physiological phenomenon. Symptoms can usually be improved by increasing fluid intake appropriately, and no special treatment is required.

2. Yin Deficiency with Hyperactivity of Fire

Yin deficiency with internal heat can deplete body fluids, leading to symptoms such as dry mouth and tongue upon waking. It is recommended to take medications such as Liuwei Dihuang Pills, Zhibai Dihuang Pills, or Qiju Dihuang Pills under medical supervision.

3. Excessive Liver Fire

Excessive liver fire may disrupt the functions of liver and gallbladder meridians, causing insufficient body fluids and resulting in dry mouth, dry tongue, and tongue stiffness. Treatment may include taking Longdan Xiegan Pills, Jiawei Xiaoyao Pills, or Xiao Chaihu Decoction as directed by a physician.

4. Wind-Heat Common Cold

During a wind-heat type of common cold, the body experiences an inflammatory response, leading to elevated body temperature and increased sweating. Excessive sweating may result in dehydration, including reduced oral moisture, thereby causing the aforementioned symptoms. Patients are advised to take medications such as Ganmao Qingre Oral Liquid or Sangju Cold Granules as prescribed.

5. Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is overactive and produces excessive thyroid hormones. These hormones affect metabolism and body temperature regulation. In hyperthyroidism, accelerated metabolism may lead to excessive sweating. Significant fluid loss through sweat can cause dehydration, contributing to the symptoms described. Patients should take medications such as Methimazole Tablets or Propylthiouracil Tablets as directed by their physician.

Patients are advised to seek timely medical attention when experiencing discomfort and to undergo standardized treatment under professional guidance to promote recovery.
