What is the best treatment for thymoma?
Due to individual differences in medical conditions, there is generally no single optimal treatment for thymoma. Thymoma requires tailored treatment approaches based on the specific condition, typically including surgical resection, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
1. Surgical Resection
For thymomas with an intact capsule that have not invaded surrounding tissues, surgical removal is usually an effective treatment option. Complete resection of the thymus tissue can essentially achieve a curative outcome.
2. Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy is typically used as an adjuvant treatment in managing thymoma. If the tumor has partially invaded surrounding tissues, surgery is generally performed to remove the thymoma along with the affected areas en bloc whenever possible, followed by radiation therapy to the surrounding tissues.
3. Chemotherapy
In cases where thymoma has metastasized to distant sites, systemic chemotherapy is generally required after surgical removal. Additionally, if complete resection is not feasible or if there are isolated metastatic lymph nodes, prolonged postoperative chemotherapy is usually recommended.
Patients are advised to ensure adequate rest in daily life and avoid strenuous physical activity to prevent worsening of symptoms.
