What to do if you're hungry during fasting for cholecystitis
Patients with cholecystitis who are fasting and feel hungry may, under a doctor's guidance, consume small amounts of food or receive parenteral nutrition to alleviate hunger. However, they should avoid eating too much at once or consuming hard-to-digest foods.
1. Small meals
After consulting a doctor, patients may consume small amounts of liquid or semi-liquid foods such as millet soup or noodle broth. Eating until hunger is slightly relieved is sufficient; overeating should be avoided. If hunger is severe, patients may also eat some carbohydrates like steamed buns or bread, which can increase satiety without significantly increasing digestive burden.
2. Parenteral nutrition
If strict fasting is required for cholecystitis patients, parenteral nutrition—either through peripheral intravenous (PIV) or central venous access—can be administered by a healthcare provider to deliver nutrient solutions and relieve discomfort.
It is essential to strictly follow medical instructions regarding fasting and avoid eating blindly, which could interfere with treatment or recovery.
