Introduction
Class A infectious diseases refer to highly contagious, severe infectious diseases with high mortality rates that are prone to cause widespread epidemics. According to the “Law on the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases of the People’s Republic of China,” Class A infectious diseases include plague and cholera. Plague is a naturally occurring zoonotic disease caused by *Yersinia pestis*, primarily affecting rodents. Its clinical manifestations are predominantly characterized by pronounced toxemia.

Infectious diseases refer to illnesses caused by pathogenic microorganisms—including prions, viruses, chlamydiae, rickettsiae, mycoplasmas, bacteria, fungi, spirochetes, and parasites (e.g., protozoa, helminths, and medically important arthropods)—that infect humans and possess transmissibility. Under certain conditions, these diseases may spread widely within populations. The three fundamental elements required for the transmission of infectious diseases are: (1) source of infection, (2) route of transmission, and (3) susceptible population.

Class A Infectious Diseases

Class A infectious diseases are highly contagious, often fatal, and prone to cause large-scale epidemics. According to the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases, Class A infectious diseases include plague and cholera. Plague is a naturally occurring zoonotic disease primarily affecting rodents and caused by Yersinia pestis.

Clinically, plague manifests predominantly as severe toxemia, accompanied by localized symptoms. The most common form is acute lymphadenitis (bubonic plague), followed by septicemic plague and pneumonic plague. Meningeal and cutaneous forms are rare. Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by Vibrio cholerae strains that produce cholera toxin. Its hallmark clinical feature is profuse, watery diarrhea—often described as “rice-water stool.” Severe cases may lead to hypocalcemia, metabolic acidosis, and circulatory collapse.

How to Prevent Class A Infectious Diseases

1. Wash hands frequently using soap or hand sanitizer and running water; avoid drying hands with unclean towels. Hands should be washed immediately after contact with respiratory secretions (e.g., after sneezing). Additionally, practice good respiratory hygiene: cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing, and wash hands promptly afterward. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

2. Strengthen physical fitness and immunity through balanced nutrition, moderate exercise, regular sleep schedules, and avoidance of excessive fatigue.

3. Maintain clean and well-ventilated environments. Open windows several times daily to ensure fresh indoor air. Minimize visits to crowded places and avoid close contact with individuals suffering from respiratory infections. If respiratory symptoms such as cough, rhinorrhea, or fever occur, stay home to rest and seek medical attention promptly.

4. Special reminder for families with children: Adults infected with influenza or other infectious diseases should avoid close contact with children. In households with two or more children, if one becomes ill with influenza, designate a single caregiver—preferably a consistent family member—to attend to the patient, while strictly observing personal protective measures.
