Introduction
A sudden urge to cough uncontrollably may be related to throat irritation, allergic reactions, respiratory infections, allergic cough, bronchitis, or other causes. Certain substances or physical stimuli can irritate the throat and trigger a cough reflex. These may include dust, chemicals, smoke, strong odors, dry air, etc.

An upward rush of air often triggers an uncontrollable dry cough, which may be related to throat irritation, allergic reactions, respiratory infections, allergic cough, bronchitis, and other causes. Treatment can involve lifestyle adjustments or medication. Specific details are as follows:

  1. Throat irritation: Certain substances or physical stimuli can irritate the throat and trigger a cough reflex. These may include dust, chemicals, smoke, strong odors, and dry air. When such irritants enter the respiratory tract, the throat produces a reflexive cough to expel them.

  2. Allergic reaction: If a patient is allergic to certain allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander, exposure to these substances prompts the immune system to release chemicals that cause inflammation in the throat and airways. This allergic response may lead to coughing, which can persist for some time.

  3. Respiratory infection: Conditions like the common cold or influenza can cause symptoms including an itchy throat and dry cough. Patients may take medications under a doctor’s guidance, such as acetaminophen tablets or oseltamivir phosphate granules.

  4. Allergic cough: This type of cough is triggered by exposure to allergens. It typically presents as paroxysmal, irritating dry cough, often accompanied by a sensation of a foreign body in the throat or itching. Without timely treatment, this may result in frequent episodes of an uncontrollable dry cough. Under medical supervision, patients may take oral medications such as levocetirizine hydrochloride tablets or loratadine tablets.

  5. Bronchitis: Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchial tubes caused by bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens. Common symptoms include coughing, sputum production, and chest tightness. Under a doctor's direction, patients may use medications such as penicillin V potassium tablets or ribavirin granules. Drinking plenty of water helps thin mucus and facilitates its expulsion.

It is recommended to seek medical attention promptly for thorough examination and diagnosis, so that a physician can develop an appropriate treatment plan based on individual circumstances.
