Common warts are generally contagious.

Common warts can occur on various parts of the body and are typically infectious. Individuals who already have warts or are infected with human papillomavirus (HPV) can serve as sources of transmission. The virus spreads mainly through direct or indirect contact. Transmission may occur via direct skin-to-skin contact, and in some cases, through sexual contact. Touching skin areas affected by warts and then touching other parts of the body may also lead to the spread of warts. If patients experience symptoms such as itching or pain, they may use medications like salicylic acid ointment, tretinoin cream, or imiquimod cream under medical guidance to alleviate discomfort. When necessary, treatments such as curettage or surgical excision may be performed.

To prevent common warts, it is advisable to avoid contact with potential sources of infection, strengthen the immune system, and maintain a healthy lifestyle—including balanced nutrition, moderate exercise, quitting smoking and limiting alcohol consumption, and ensuring adequate sleep. If any physical discomfort occurs, prompt medical attention is recommended to prevent worsening of the condition.
