Why are blood glucose readings different when measured at the same time?
There are several reasons why blood glucose readings taken at the same time may differ, including differences in measurement methods, diet and physical activity, and natural blood glucose fluctuations.
1. Different measurement methods
Different glucometers, test strips, and blood sampling sites can lead to varying results. For example, glucometers from different brands may have varying degrees of measurement error; test strips may differ in their sensitivity and range for detecting glucose concentrations; and blood samples taken from different sites may reflect different glucose levels.
2. Diet and physical activity
Diet and exercise significantly affect blood glucose levels. If measurements are taken under different dietary or activity conditions, the results may vary accordingly.
3. Blood glucose fluctuations
Blood glucose levels naturally fluctuate over time and with changes in physical condition. Therefore, readings taken at different times or under different physiological states may yield different results.
In addition, improper disinfection techniques may also contribute to inconsistent blood glucose readings even when measured simultaneously. To obtain accurate and reliable blood glucose measurements, it is recommended to perform multiple tests at the same time of day, using the same blood sampling site, the same brand of glucometer and test strips, while maintaining consistent diet and activity levels.
