What causes mild pain in the breast when lying face down and putting pressure on it?
Pressing on the breasts while lying face down may cause mild pain, which can result from both physiological and pathological factors. Common causes include chronic mastitis and breast cysts. Patients with these conditions typically experience clinical symptoms such as persistent breast tenderness and breast lumps.
1. Physiological Factors
When breasts are under prolonged pressure, not only is the local sympathetic nervous tissue stimulated, but it also leads to poor regional blood flow and oxygen perfusion. Under the influence of these two factors, individuals may experience transient physiological reactions such as breast pain, numbness, and prickling sensations.
2. Pathological Factors
1. Chronic Mastitis
This condition usually presents with mild symptoms and is often not easily noticed by patients. However, when the breast is subjected to long-term pressure or irritation, it may intensify stimulation to the affected breast tissues and ducts, thereby worsening symptoms such as breast pain, nipple discharge, and chest discomfort.
2. Breast Cysts
This is a benign tumor-like lesion. When breast cysts are continuously compressed, the cystic contents can easily stimulate surrounding sympathetic nerve plexuses, triggering or exacerbating breast pain. In some patients, the presence of cysts can be detected through physical palpation of the breast.
The aforementioned symptoms cannot rule out other diseases such as breast cancer. It is recommended that patients seek timely medical evaluation at a hospital to exclude the possibility of pathological changes.
