What does it mean when the umbilical blood flow PI is high?
Umbilical blood flow refers to fetal umbilical artery blood flow. An elevated pulsatility index (PI) in the umbilical artery usually indicates abnormal placental circulation, which increases resistance to blood flow within the umbilical cord and may lead to fetal hypoxia.
The umbilical artery blood flow generally reflects the blood supply and oxygenation status of the fetus. During pregnancy, conditions such as nuchal cord (umbilical cord around the neck), excessive twisting of the cord, or abnormal placental circulation may cause an elevated umbilical artery PI. Additionally, maternal conditions like hyperthyroidism or gestational diabetes may also contribute to an increased umbilical artery PI.
Regular prenatal checkups at the hospital are necessary. Adequate rest should be maintained to avoid excessive fatigue. A varied diet rich in protein and vitamins—such as eggs, lean meat, spinach, and celery—is recommended. It is also important to avoid exposure to radioactive substances or radiation environments to prevent adverse effects on normal fetal growth and development.
