Does language regression necessarily mean autism?
Autism refers to autism spectrum disorder. In general, language regression may be associated with autism, but it may also not be related to autism. The specific analysis is as follows:
1. Possible
Autism symptoms usually begin to appear before the age of three and are mainly characterized by impairments in social interaction and interpersonal relationships, lack of interest in sharing enjoyment with others, difficulties in verbal and nonverbal communication, limited interests in activities or play, and an unusual focus on details. If a child has prolonged lack of interaction with others, as the condition progressively develops, language regression may occur, leading to an inability to communicate normally.
2. Not necessarily
Besides autism, language regression may also result from prolonged isolation in a closed environment without communication, causing deterioration in language expression ability, or from severe fright leading to psychological panic or even damage to the language-related nervous system.
When language regression occurs, timely medical evaluation is necessary to determine the exact cause through thorough examination and to initiate appropriate treatment promptly.
