Introduction
The differences between coagulation四项 (four-item panel) and coagulation六项 (six-item panel) mainly lie in the time to obtain results, the specific tests included, and the associated diseases. Since the four-item coagulation test involves four parameters while the six-item test includes six parameters, there is a difference in the turnaround time after blood collection and laboratory analysis—the results for the six-item panel usually take slightly longer to be reported.

The differences between coagulation四项 (four-item coagulation test) and coagulation六项 (six-item coagulation test) mainly lie in the time required to obtain results, the items tested, and the associated diseases.

1. Different turnaround times

Since the four-item coagulation test involves four parameters while the six-item test includes six parameters, there is a difference in the time it takes for laboratory results to be available after blood collection. The six-item panel generally takes slightly longer to complete.

2. Different test items

The four-item coagulation test evaluates activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), prothrombin time (PT), fibrinogen, and thrombin time (TT). In addition to these four items, the six-item test also includes plasma D-dimer and sometimes additional fibrinogen assessment (or clarification on fibrinogen degradation products, depending on context).

3. Different associated conditions

The four-item coagulation test helps assess overall blood clotting function and determine whether it falls within the normal range. It is commonly used in clinical practice for evaluating liver disease and as an auxiliary test for hematological disorders. The six-item test not only aids in diagnosing the aforementioned conditions but also allows for the detection of thrombotic disorders, such as deep vein thrombosis or disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), particularly through D-dimer measurement.

Besides the above, there may also be differences in cost between the four-item and six-item coagulation tests. Patients are advised to select the appropriate testing panel based on their specific medical condition.
