What can be used as a substitute for a bandage if there isn't one available?
If adhesive bandages are not available, wounds can be treated with normal saline, hydrogen peroxide, and medical gauze.
If the wound is shallow and small in area, involving only minor skin damage, you may first clean the affected area with normal saline or hydrogen peroxide to remove dirt and prevent infection. After cleaning, apply medications such as tetracycline ointment or erythromycin ointment to the wound as directed by a healthcare provider to help prevent infection. Then cover the wound with medical gauze to minimize contamination.
If the wound is deep or large in area, after cleaning with normal saline and hydrogen peroxide, seek prompt medical evaluation at a hospital to determine whether debridement and suturing are necessary. Further treatment should be based on the clinical assessment and examination results.
