What causes a pulse oximeter to show fluctuating heart rate readings, sometimes high and sometimes low?
Blood oxygen monitor readings showing fluctuating heart rates may be due to physiological factors, or could result from pathological conditions such as severe anemia or heart failure. The specific analysis is as follows:
I. Physiological Factors
If the device is malfunctioning or if measurement techniques are incorrect, this may affect the accuracy of results, leading to fluctuating readings. It is recommended to replace the device and take measurements again.
II. Pathological Conditions
1. Severe Anemia
In cases of severe anemia, myocardial ischemia may lead to arrhythmia, causing the heart rate to fluctuate during instrument measurement. This can be alleviated through dietary improvements, blood transfusion therapy, or taking ferrous sulfate syrup or ferrous fumarate tablets as prescribed.
2. Heart Failure
Impaired cardiac systolic and diastolic function can disrupt normal blood flow, resulting in irregular heartbeat. Medications such as enteric-coated aspirin tablets, triamterene tablets, or atorvastatin calcium tablets may be used as directed by a physician to relieve symptoms.
In addition to the above common causes, respiratory failure and other conditions cannot be ruled out. Timely examinations such as electrocardiogram (ECG) or CT scans are necessary for accurate diagnosis.
