Introduction
Whether urine retention affects blood pressure depends on the degree of retention and whether the individual has underlying medical conditions. Brief urine retention in healthy individuals without other diseases does not affect blood pressure. However, in patients with conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis, or elderly individuals with difficulty urinating, urine retention may lead to acute urinary retention and stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, affecting cardiac contractility and relaxation as well as blood flow velocity, thereby causing an increase in blood pressure.

Whether holding urine affects blood pressure depends on the severity of urine retention and whether other underlying diseases are present. It is recommended to develop healthy urination habits.

1. No effect

If urine is held only for a short period and there are no other health conditions, it typically does not affect blood pressure.

2. May have an effect

In individuals with conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostatitis, or in elderly patients who have difficulty urinating, holding urine may lead to acute urinary retention. This can stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, causing sympathetic activation, which may affect heart contraction and relaxation functions, blood flow velocity, and ultimately lead to elevated blood pressure.

It is advisable to maintain healthy lifestyle habits and avoid holding urine. Patients with hypertension should receive treatment under the guidance of a qualified physician to keep blood pressure within a normal range.
