Introduction
Before undergoing a colonoscopy, it is necessary to rule out contraindications, follow a light diet, complete bowel preparation, discontinue anticoagulant medications, and stay relaxed. Common post-colonoscopy precautions include temporary fasting, close monitoring of symptoms, moderate activity, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and refraining from heavy physical labor. If significant abdominal pain occurs during recovery, prompt medical evaluation is recommended to determine the cause and receive appropriate treatment.

Before undergoing a colonoscopy, it is necessary to rule out contraindications, maintain a light diet, perform bowel preparation, discontinue anticoagulant medications, and stay relaxed. Common considerations after a colonoscopy include temporary fasting, close monitoring of symptoms, moderate activity, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and refraining from heavy physical labor.

I. Pre-Colonoscopy Considerations

1. Rule Out Contraindications
Under medical guidance, patients should undergo tests such as complete blood count, coagulation function, and liver and kidney function assessments in advance to ensure there are no contraindications for colonoscopy.

2. Light Diet
For three days prior to the procedure, maintain a light diet consisting mainly of easily digestible liquid or semi-liquid foods.

3. Bowel Preparation
The evening before the colonoscopy, use laxatives such as compound mannitol injection, lactulose oral solution, or polyethylene glycol 4000 powder under medical supervision to induce diarrhea until stools become pale yellow and watery.

4. Discontinue Anticoagulant Medications
Patients should stop taking anticoagulant drugs, as they may inhibit platelet aggregation in the intestines and interfere with the accuracy of the examination.

5. Stay Relaxed
It is recommended to maintain a calm and positive mindset. Anxiety may cause anal sphincter contraction, increasing the difficulty of the procedure.

II. Post-Colonoscopy Considerations

1. Temporary Fasting
If no biopsy or polypectomy was performed during the procedure, fasting for two hours afterward is required. If tissue samples were taken or polyps removed, follow the doctor’s specific instructions regarding when to resume eating.

2. Monitor Symptoms Closely
Mild abdominal pain or bloating may occur after colonoscopy and are generally normal. Monitor body temperature regularly and observe whether there is blood in the stool. Seek medical advice promptly if persistent pain or bleeding occurs.

3. Moderate Activity
Light physical activity after the procedure can enhance intestinal motility, help expel gas, and relieve bloating.

4. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol
Smoking after colonoscopy may introduce harmful substances that irritate the intestines, increase intestinal burden, and worsen discomfort such as abdominal pain and bloating. Drinking alcohol may irritate and damage the intestinal lining, leading to inflammation or bleeding, which hinders recovery.

5. Avoid Heavy Physical Labor
Refrain from strenuous physical work, as it may stretch and strain the intestines, potentially causing injury. In severe cases, complications such as intestinal bleeding or perforation may occur.

Whether before or after a colonoscopy, strictly follow your doctor's instructions to avoid affecting the examination results or intestinal recovery. If significant abdominal pain develops and persists during recovery, seek immediate medical attention to determine the cause and receive appropriate treatment.
