Normal uric acid level ranges for men and women
The normal uric acid level for males is 2.5 mg/dL to 6.4 mg/dL, and for females, it is 1.6 mg/dL to 5.0 mg/dL.
Uric acid is a substance found in the human body and is the metabolic end product of purines. The amount of uric acid synthesized in the body should remain balanced with the amount excreted. Normal uric acid levels generally differ between males and females, with males ranging from 2.5 mg/dL to 6.4 mg/dL and females from 1.6 mg/dL to 5.0 mg/dL. Imbalance may indicate a disorder in purine metabolism, which could be a transient physiological response—for example, due to recent consumption of spicy or stimulating foods, animal offal, seafood, or other high-purine foods. In such cases, no special treatment is usually required. Patients are advised to manage symptoms through dietary control and increased water intake. However, if normal physiological causes are ruled out, the imbalance might stem from pathological conditions, such as renal insufficiency leading to impaired uric acid excretion. In these cases, medications such as aspirin tablets, celecoxib capsules, or benzbromarone tablets may be used under a doctor's guidance.
It is also recommended to maintain a light diet, consume more foods that help lower uric acid, drink plenty of water, and engage in moderate aerobic exercise.
