What happens if you take acetaminophen tablets for low-grade fever?
Low fever usually refers to mild fever. Taking acetaminophen tablets for mild fever may result in normalization of body temperature, increased sweating, gastrointestinal discomfort, effects on liver and kidney function, and risk of drug dependence. It is recommended to use medication as directed by a physician.

1. Normalization of Body Temperature
Acetaminophen works by inhibiting prostaglandin synthase in the hypothalamic thermoregulatory center, thereby reducing the synthesis and release of prostaglandins, achieving antipyretic effects. Therefore, even in cases of mild fever, body temperature may gradually return to normal after taking the medication.
2. Increased Sweating
When exerting its antipyretic effect, this drug causes peripheral vasodilation and increased skin blood flow, promoting sweating to enhance heat dissipation. As a result, patients with mild fever may experience increased sweating after taking it. Adequate hydration and electrolyte replenishment should be ensured to prevent dehydration.
3. Gastrointestinal Discomfort
Acetaminophen may irritate the gastrointestinal tract. Some individuals may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite after taking the drug. These symptoms may be more pronounced in people who already have weak gastrointestinal function.
4. Effects on Liver and Kidney Function
Although acetaminophen is relatively safe at recommended doses, it must be metabolized and excreted through organs such as the liver and kidneys. Unnecessary use during mild fever may increase the metabolic burden on these organs. Long-term or excessive use could potentially cause damage to liver and kidney function.
5. Risk of Drug Dependence
Frequent use of acetaminophen to relieve discomfort during mild fever may lead to psychological dependence. This may overlook the fact that mild fever can be a normal immune response of the body, which is not conducive to addressing the underlying issue and may increase the risk of unnecessary medication use.
In general, acetaminophen should only be considered when body temperature exceeds 38.5°C. Patients with mild fever should drink plenty of warm water, maintain a healthy diet focused on light foods, get adequate bed rest, and avoid excessive fatigue.
