Is it safe to have intercourse 26 days after a D&C (dilation and curettage)?
Sexual intercourse is generally not recommended 26 days after a dilation and curettage (D&C), as it may lead to infection.
A D&C involves surgical procedures within the uterine cavity, typically using medical instruments to remove embryonic tissue or the endometrial lining, which may cause injury to the cervix and vagina. After surgery, the body is relatively weak and light vaginal bleeding may occur. By day 26, the cervical and vaginal mucosa may not yet be fully healed; engaging in intercourse at this stage could allow bacteria to enter the uterine cavity, leading to infection. It may also trigger conditions such as vaginitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or cervicitis, and in severe cases, could result in infertility.
After a D&C, it's important to maintain good genital hygiene by washing daily with warm water and frequently changing and washing underwear. Nutrition should also be strengthened through diet to promote recovery.
