Introduction
Can sexual intercourse be performed during pregnancy? Generally speaking, from a medical perspective, sexual intercourse is permissible during pregnancy. However, for pregnant women at risk of miscarriage, sexual activity should be conducted with caution—both in terms of frequency and timing, which varies by trimester. Sexual intercourse is strictly prohibited during the first trimester (early pregnancy) and third trimester (late pregnancy). In special circumstances such as placenta previa, sexual intercourse must be avoided entirely to prevent severe hemorrhage.

Pregnancy refers to the physiological process from conception to delivery. Generally, the first 12 weeks of gestation are termed early pregnancy; weeks 13–27 constitute mid-pregnancy; and week 28 onward is classified as late pregnancy. So, is sexual intercourse permissible during pregnancy? The following addresses this question.

Is Sexual Intercourse Permissible During Pregnancy?

From a medical standpoint, sexual intercourse is generally permissible during pregnancy. However, for women at risk of miscarriage, sexual activity must be approached with caution—both in terms of frequency and timing. Intercourse is contraindicated during early and late pregnancy. In early pregnancy, the placenta has not yet fully matured, and its attachment to the uterine wall remains relatively weak, resulting in insufficient embryonic anchorage within the uterus. Concurrently, inadequate progesterone secretion fails to provide robust support for the embryo; thus, sexual activity during this period may trigger miscarriage. In late pregnancy, intercourse may precipitate preterm labor. During mid-pregnancy, the embryo is comparatively stable, and moderate sexual activity is acceptable—provided movements remain gentle. For special conditions such as placenta previa, sexual intercourse is strictly prohibited to prevent life-threatening hemorrhage.

Knowledge Extension: Key Considerations During Pregnancy

1. Sleep Position

Pregnant women should ensure adequate sleep and avoid frequent late-night hours, which may adversely affect fetal development. Attention should also be paid to sleeping posture: during early pregnancy, sleeping position is unrestricted. During mid-pregnancy, abdominal protection is essential to avoid direct external pressure. For women with polyhydramnios or twin pregnancies, side-lying is recommended.

2. Emotional Well-being

Maternal emotional instability can impair fetal growth and development and increase miscarriage risk. Therefore, maintaining a positive and relaxed mood is highly advisable. Moreover, the first trimester is the critical period for fetal neural tube development; hence, expectant mothers should rigorously avoid environments containing tobacco smoke, alcohol, or harmful chemical substances.

3. Avoiding Stimuli

Pregnant women should select products possessing five key attributes: naturalness, safety, professionalism, efficacy, and foundational suitability—ensuring no harm to either mother or fetus while effectively addressing skin concerns common during pregnancy and postpartum. Additionally, exposure to electromagnetic radiation should be minimized: maintain a safe distance from televisions, and limit use of mobile phones, computers, and microwave ovens whenever possible.

The above outlines whether sexual intercourse is permissible during pregnancy. We hope this information proves helpful.
