What causes itchy eyelids?
Itchy eyelids may be caused by physiological factors, or could result from pathological conditions such as eczema or insect bite dermatitis. Details are as follows:
I. Physiological Causes
Excessive eye use recently may lead to eye fatigue, causing poor ocular blood circulation and abnormal skin sensations that result in itching. This is a normal physiological phenomenon that does not require special treatment. However, it's important to ensure adequate sleep and avoid prolonged use of electronic devices.
II. Pathological Causes
1. Eczema
Frequent use of irritating cosmetics may trigger eczema. In such cases, the skin around the eyes may exhibit allergic reactions, leading to symptoms such as itching and swelling. Under a doctor's guidance, medications like levocetirizine hydrochloride tablets, loratadine tablets, or chlorpheniramine maleate tablets may be used for treatment.
2. Insect Bite Dermatitis
Insect bites around the eyes may induce insect bite dermatitis. Toxins secreted by insects can excessively irritate the skin, causing prickling itch and pain. Under medical supervision, calamine lotion, erythromycin ointment, or mupirocin ointment can be applied topically.
Besides the above causes, conjunctivitis could also be responsible. Under a doctor’s guidance, oral cefixime dispersible tablets, acyclovir dispersible tablets, or ofloxacin eye drops may be prescribed. If clinical symptoms fail to improve after medication, prompt consultation with an ophthalmologist at a reputable hospital is recommended.
