What tests should be rechecked after taking statins?
Statins refer to a class of drugs known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. After starting statin therapy, it is generally necessary to undergo tests such as lipid profile, liver function, and blood glucose monitoring. The details are as follows:
1. Lipid Profile
Common statin medications include atorvastatin calcium tablets, simvastatin tablets, rosuvastatin calcium tablets, fluvastatin sodium sustained-release tablets, and pitavastatin calcium tablets. These drugs work by inhibiting the activity of cholesterol-synthesizing enzymes in the body, thereby helping to lower cholesterol levels and achieve lipid-lowering effects. After initiating statin therapy, a lipid profile test should be performed to evaluate the drug's effectiveness.
2. Liver Function Tests
The liver is primarily responsible for metabolizing statin drugs. Therefore, statin use may potentially cause liver damage. Liver function tests help assess whether indicators such as gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), transaminases (ALT/AST), and bilirubin are abnormal, thus determining if liver function is impaired.
3. Blood Glucose Monitoring
Long-term use of statins may lead to elevated blood glucose levels. Therefore, fasting blood glucose levels should be monitored regularly.
In addition, other tests such as electrocardiogram (ECG) and complete blood count (CBC) may also be recommended. If any abnormalities are detected, the medication should be discontinued promptly.
