What happens if you do sit-ups during your period?
Generally, doing sit-ups during menstruation may lead to increased menstrual flow, abdominal pain, and even endometriosis. It is not advisable to perform sit-ups during the menstrual period. Instead, adequate rest is recommended, and exercise should be resumed after menstruation has completely finished. The specific reasons are as follows:
1. Increased menstrual flow
During sit-ups, the abdominal muscles are stretched, increasing pelvic pressure and worsening pelvic congestion, which may result in heavier menstrual bleeding or prolonged spotting.
2. Abdominal pain
Sit-ups can stimulate the uterus, accelerating uterine contractions, leading to abdominal discomfort or exacerbating menstrual cramps.
3. Development of endometriosis
Performing sit-ups increases intra-abdominal pressure, putting pressure on the uterus. This may force menstrual blood to flow backward through the fallopian tubes into the pelvic cavity. Endometrial stroma or glands contained in the menstrual blood may then implant in areas such as the fallopian tubes or ovaries, potentially causing endometriosis.
In severe cases, this may even lead to infertility. It is therefore recommended to avoid sit-ups during menstruation, prioritize rest, and resume physical activity only after the menstrual period has ended.
