Introduction
What Causes Elbow Joint Pain? 1. Muscle strain—avoid lifting or carrying heavy objects with the affected arm. 2. Cervical spondylosis—may cause dizziness and headache. 3. Gout—excessive uric acid crystals deposit in the joint synovium, triggering inflammation. 4. Rheumatoid arthritis—characterized by localized redness, swelling, heat, and severe pain. 5. Degenerative osteoarthritis—leads to pain and swelling in multiple joints.

When our bodies develop certain diseases, symptoms may manifest as pain or in other ways. Elbow pain should never be taken lightly, as it may signal an underlying medical condition. So, what causes elbow joint pain? Below, we provide answers to this question.

What Causes Elbow Joint Pain?

1. Muscle Strain

Muscle strain can cause elbow joint pain; topical medications are generally recommended for treatment. Patients must avoid exerting force on the affected wrist joint, ensure adequate rest, and refrain from lifting or carrying heavy objects with the affected arm—otherwise, recovery may be impeded.

2. Cervical Spondylosis

A common orthopedic disorder primarily characterized by stiffness and pain in the neck and shoulder region. Symptoms are highly variable and complex. Initially, many patients experience only mild symptoms, but progression may lead to dizziness, headache, upper-limb numbness, muscle atrophy, and—in severe cases—spasticity of both lower limbs, gait disturbance, quadriplegia, urinary or fecal incontinence, and even paralysis.

3. Gout

Gout triggers joint inflammation due to excessive deposition of uric acid crystals in the synovial membrane, provoking an inflammatory response and resulting in severe pain. Without prompt and effective treatment, the disease may progressively worsen, potentially leading to gout-related kidney damage or other serious complications. Therefore, gout warrants serious attention; any suspected gout-like symptoms should be promptly evaluated and confirmed through clinical diagnosis.

4. Rheumatoid Arthritis

An acute or chronic connective tissue disorder that commonly affects large joints such as the knees, ankles, shoulders, elbows, and wrists. The disease often migrates from one joint to another. Affected joints typically exhibit erythema, warmth, and intense pain. Some patients may simultaneously develop involvement in multiple joints. Atypical cases may present solely with joint pain without other signs of inflammation. Acute inflammation usually resolves within 2–4 weeks without sequelae, though recurrent episodes are common.

5. Degenerative Osteoarthritis

This is also a common orthopedic condition causing pain and swelling in multiple joints. Predilection sites include the distal and proximal interphalangeal joints of the hands, knees, elbows, shoulders, and spinal joints, whereas the wrists and ankles are less frequently involved. As the disease advances, joint contractures, instability, pain at rest, and worsening pain during weight-bearing activities may occur.

The above outlines the common causes of elbow joint pain. We hope this information proves helpful to you.
