Why does the ear canal hurt when touched?
Generally, pain upon touching the external auditory canal may be caused by factors such as external ear eczema, otitis externa, or furuncles in the external auditory canal. Once symptoms occur, the underlying cause should be identified as early as possible, and appropriate treatment should be selected under a doctor's guidance. Specific analyses are as follows:
1. External Ear Eczema
Inflammation in the superficial dermis of the outer ear, triggered by factors like medication or allergies, can lead to increased ear canal flaking, along with symptoms such as redness, itching, and pain. Treatment may include medications prescribed by a physician, such as triamcinolone acetonide acetate solution, boric acid and borneol ear drops, or boric acid and zinc oxide ointment. Maintaining good ear hygiene is also important.
2. Otitis Externa
Inflammatory reactions in the auricle and external auditory canal can locally irritate the ear canal, triggering inflammatory mediators and resulting in pain, swelling of the inner canal wall, and possibly enlarged lymph nodes around the ear. Prompt medical treatment is recommended. Under medical supervision, oral medications such as metronidazole tablets, amoxicillin capsules, or cefixime granules can be taken to achieve antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.
3. Furuncle of the External Auditory Canal
The skin layer of the external auditory canal is thin; bacterial infection may cause adhesion between the skin and periosteum, progressing into a furuncle. This stimulates peripheral nerves, leading to symptoms such as ear pain and itching. If the furuncle is large, consult a doctor for incision and drainage. Enhanced care and nursing measures are also necessary.
In addition, similar symptoms may also be associated with conditions such as otitis media, perichondritis of the auricle, or cholesteatoma of the external auditory canal. Prompt medical attention is advised upon noticing any symptoms, and regular follow-up visits are recommended during recovery.
