Introduction
Under normal circumstances, an indwelling needle is a relatively soft intravenous infusion device that can reduce the pain of repeated venipuncture and alleviate fear of injections. A suitable blood vessel should be selected—typically one that is relatively thick, straight, has good blood flow, and good elasticity. A tourniquet is applied approximately 10 cm above the puncture site, and the skin at the puncture site is disinfected with a rotating motion, covering an area of approximately 8 cm × 8 cm.

Generally, an indwelling needle is a relatively soft intravenous infusion device that can reduce the pain of repeated venipuncture and alleviate fear of injections. The specific procedures for insertion and withdrawal are as follows:

1. Locate a suitable vein, preferably one that is relatively thick, straight, has good blood flow, and good elasticity.

2. Apply a tourniquet approximately 10 cm above the puncture site. Rotate and disinfect the skin at the puncture site, covering an area of about 8 cm × 8 cm.

3. Open the indwelling needle package, remove the needle sheath, adjust the needle, and hold the fist tightly to expel air from inside the needle.

4. Use the left hand to stretch the skin taut, and with the right hand, hold the needle with the bevel facing upward. Insert the needle into the skin at a 15–30° angle relative to the puncture site.

5. After observing flashback of blood, lower the angle of insertion and advance the needle another 1–2 mm to ensure the catheter fully enters the vessel.

6. Use the thumb on the transparent hub together with the index finger to advance the catheter into the vein, while stabilizing the needle holder with the middle finger, until the catheter is fully inserted into the vessel.

7. Stabilize the needle hub with the left hand and withdraw the metal needle with the right hand.

Insertion of an indwelling needle requires professional skill. To avoid potential harm, it is recommended that the procedure be performed under the guidance of a qualified healthcare provider.
