The correct method of oxygen inhalation via nasal cannula
Generally, regardless of the underlying disease, a decrease in oxygen saturation or partial pressure of oxygen requires oxygen therapy. The most common method of oxygen delivery is nasal cannula oxygenation, which is characterized by simple operation and high patient acceptance. The specific procedure is as follows:
1. Check the patient's nasal cavity for foreign bodies and ensure the airway is patent.
2. Wipe the nasal cannula with 75% alcohol swabs and clean the patient’s nasal cavity with normal saline.
3. Attach the oxygen regulator to the oxygen cylinder and connect the humidifier bottle, which should be filled with 1/2 to 1/3 cold boiled water or warm water.
4. Connect the oxygen tubing and check for any leaks. If no leakage is detected, insert the nasal cannula into the patient’s nostrils.
5. Adjust the oxygen device settings and verify that oxygen flows smoothly.
During oxygen therapy, strictly follow the doctor’s instructions regarding duration of use to avoid potential harm to the body. If nasal dryness occurs during oxygen administration, increase fluid intake to help alleviate discomfort.
