The process of curettage surgery
Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a surgical procedure that involves scraping uterine endometrial tissue for the diagnosis and treatment of related conditions. The specific steps of the D&C procedure are as follows:
1. After the patient empties her bladder, she assumes the lithotomy position. The vulva and vagina are disinfected, and sterile drapes are placed.
2. A bimanual examination is performed to determine the size and position of the uterus.
3. A vaginal speculum is used to expose the cervix, which is then disinfected along with the cervical canal.
4. The anterior or posterior lip of the cervix is grasped with a cervical clamp. A uterine sound is inserted to determine the direction of the uterus and estimate the depth of the uterine cavity. If the cervical os is too tight, cervical dilators are used to gradually dilate the cervix until a curette can enter the uterus.
5. Using a specialized curette, the endometrial lining of the uterine cavity is scraped systematically—starting from the anterior wall, lateral walls, posterior wall, and fundus. Particular care should be taken when scraping the fundus, uterine isthmus, and cornua to avoid bleeding and uterine perforation.
6. The collected tissue samples are sent for pathological examination. Once it is confirmed that the uterine cavity has been adequately cleared, the procedure is concluded.
7. After completion, the patient's legs, perineum, and abdomen are cleaned, and she is helped to dress. The physician will provide a diagnosis and recommendations based on the pathology report.
It should be noted that if any complications or unexpected findings occur during the procedure, modifications to the surgical approach may be necessary. It is recommended to undergo this procedure at a正规 medical facility under the guidance of a qualified healthcare provider.
