Can Schmorl's nodes be cured?
Generally, Schmorl's nodes cannot be completely cured. This is because Schmorl's nodes are a product of lumbar disc degeneration, appearing on X-ray or MRI as protrusions of the intervertebral disc into the vertebral body through the upper or lower endplates. Whether recovery is possible depends on a detailed analysis of the specific symptoms caused by the Schmorl's node.
In most cases, for simple Schmorl's nodes, patients can improve their condition by avoiding repeated bending, refraining from heavy physical labor, and improving lifestyle habits. When localized pain occurs, topical analgesics such as Voltaren gel can be applied, or oral medications like meloxicam tablets may effectively relieve symptoms. However, if the Schmorl's node leads to vertebral deformation or nerve compression—indicating an irreversible structural change—the condition cannot be fundamentally cured. In such cases, treatment focuses on relieving nerve compression and alleviating local symptoms through conservative approaches (such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, acupuncture) or surgical intervention, all under a physician’s guidance.
If a patient with Schmorl's nodes experiences significant pain, it is recommended to promptly visit a reputable hospital and follow a specialist doctor’s advice for appropriate examination and treatment.
