Introduction
What Causes Intestinal Spasms? 1. Improper diet: Prolonged consumption of inappropriate foods can easily trigger intestinal spasms. 2. Gastroenteritis: If gastroenteritis is not treated promptly, it may lead to gastrointestinal bleeding. 3. Dysmenorrhea: Women experiencing menstrual cramps are also prone to intestinal spasms. 4. Allergic reactions: Abdominal pain may occur as a manifestation of such allergies.

Gastrointestinal spasm—also known as spastic colic—is the most common functional abdominal pain in children with acute abdominal pain. In otherwise healthy children, the hallmark of this condition is the sudden onset of paroxysmal, intermittent abdominal pain, with no abnormal physical signs detectable during symptom-free intervals. The abdominal pain may last from several minutes to tens of minutes and recurs intermittently. After repeated episodes lasting tens of minutes to several hours, the pain typically subsides spontaneously.

Causes of Intestinal Spasm

1. Improper Diet

Prolonged dietary indiscretion easily triggers intestinal spasm. For example, frequent consumption of excessively greasy or spicy, irritating foods can contribute to this condition. Greasy foods tend to linger in the intestines and are difficult to eliminate, while spicy foods irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa. Over time, such irritation may lead to gastrointestinal inflammation, thereby manifesting as intestinal spasm.

2. Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis is the most common underlying cause of intestinal spasm. When gastrointestinal inflammation is present, improper diet or ingestion of contaminated food readily stimulates the intestinal mucosa, precipitating intestinal spasm. If gastroenteritis remains untreated, it may progress to gastrointestinal bleeding; moreover, intestinal spasm may exacerbate pre-existing gastrointestinal inflammation.

3. Dysmenorrhea

Women experiencing dysmenorrhea are also prone to intestinal spasm. Dysmenorrhea results from hormonal imbalances—particularly elevated androgen levels—which can directly affect intestinal smooth muscle, triggering involuntary spasms. This explains why many women experience nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea during menstruation.

4. Allergy

Intestinal spasm may also arise from allergic reactions—termed “allergic intestinal spasm.” For instance, some children develop abdominal pain after consuming eggs or drinking milk due to allergic sensitization, resulting in allergic intestinal spasm. As children gradually adapt to the complex external environment, they exhibit a higher incidence of allergic responses.

How to Relieve Gastric Spasm

1. Pharmacological treatment may be selected for intestinal spasm. Mucosal protective agents—such as Gastrium (a bismuth-based compound)—not only alleviate gastrointestinal spasm but also regulate intestinal gas, relieve constipation, stimulate appetite, and improve digestive function. Prokinetic agents—including domperidone (Motilium) and Gastrosil—may also effectively treat intestinal spasm. Patients should consult a physician before initiating any medication.

2. External application of “Ku La Tu” (a traditional herbal paste) over the umbilicus may also relieve intestinal spasm symptoms. This method exerts warming and analgesic effects, promotes gastrointestinal motility, relieves smooth muscle spasm in the gastrointestinal tract, and restores normal peristalsis. Typically, 5 g of Ku La Tu is mixed with hot water or rice vinegar into a paste, warmed, and then applied to the umbilical region or the Zusanli (ST36) acupoint. Dosage should be reduced for infants and young children.

3. Finally, patients with intestinal spasm should recognize that indigestion, abdominal exposure to cold, and intestinal inflammation are common precipitants. Therefore, avoid overeating, consuming excessively cold, spicy, or greasy foods, and strive to eliminate dietary triggers. Adequate abdominal warmth is essential to minimize recurrence.

The above outlines the primary causes of intestinal spasm. We hope this information proves helpful.
