How to measure the length of a nasogastric tube for adults
Under normal circumstances, the length of a nasogastric tube inserted in adults ranges between 45–55 cm. Measurement methods include the distance from the earlobe to the tip of the nose plus the distance from the tip of the nose to the xiphoid process, or alternatively, the distance from the hairline to the xiphoid process. Taking the measurement from the hairline to the xiphoid process as an example, the specific steps are as follows:
1. Prepare a flexible measuring tape and have the patient sit upright at the edge of the bed.
2. Use the measuring tape to measure the distance from the patient's hairline to the xiphoid process.
3. Read the corresponding value on the measuring tape.
4. Mark this measured length on the nasogastric tube accordingly.
6. Prepare all necessary materials for nasogastric tube insertion and proceed with the procedure.
The measured length for adult nasogastric tube insertion should be compared against the appropriate range to avoid measurement errors that could lead to injury of the upper gastrointestinal mucosa. It is recommended that this measurement be performed by a qualified healthcare professional.
