Introduction
Chest discomfort occurring every night during the middle of sleep may be caused by conditions such as duodenal ulcer, chronic pneumonia, or coronary atherosclerotic heart disease. It can be treated with medications, surgery, or other methods. Besides these causes, it might also result from rheumatic heart disease, pulmonary embolism, or myocardial infarction. Such symptoms should be taken seriously, and prompt medical evaluation is necessary.

Discomfort in the chest at midnight every night may be caused by conditions such as duodenal ulcer, chronic pneumonia, or coronary atherosclerotic heart disease. Treatment methods include medication or surgery, with specific analysis as follows:

1. Duodenal Ulcer

Duodenal ulcer is a digestive system disorder caused by the erosion of the duodenal mucosa due to gastric acid and gastric juices. At night, increased secretion of gastric acid and gastric juices may occur, leading to stomach pain and discomfort that can disrupt sleep. Patients may take medications such as hydrotalcite tablets or omeprazole enteric-coated capsules—mucosal protectants and proton pump inhibitors—under medical guidance.

2. Chronic Pneumonia

Chronic pneumonia is a lung infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or other microorganisms, which may damage lung tissue and cause inflammation, thereby impairing respiratory function. Factors such as airway obstruction and breathing difficulties can lead to chest discomfort and shortness of breath. Patients may be treated with medications such as levofloxacin hydrochloride capsules or amoxicillin-clavulanate potassium tablets under medical supervision.

3. Coronary Atherosclerotic Heart Disease

Coronary atherosclerotic heart disease may cause myocardial ischemia and damage, resulting in symptoms such as chest tightness and pain. During nighttime rest, changes in body position or emotional fluctuations during sleep may trigger episodes of myocardial ischemia and chest pain. Patients may be treated with procedures such as cardiac stent placement.

Besides the above causes, similar symptoms may also result from rheumatic heart disease, pulmonary embolism, myocardial infarction, and other conditions. If symptoms fail to improve or continue to worsen during treatment, prompt medical attention should be sought.
