What causes rapid heartbeat in the morning, and what should be done about it?
Accelerated heart rate in the morning may be related to physiological factors, but it could also be associated with medical conditions such as sinus arrhythmia and hyperthyroidism. Treatment options include lifestyle modifications and medication interventions.
I. Physiological Factors
Under normal circumstances, sympathetic nervous system activation upon waking can cause an increased heart rate. Additionally, sudden or forceful movements when getting out of bed may lead to rapid blood circulation and a temporary increase in heart rate. This is considered a normal physiological response and can be alleviated by rising slowly from bed. No additional medical intervention is required.
II. Pathological Factors
1. Sinus Arrhythmia
Sinus arrhythmia is the most common type of arrhythmia, caused by irregular electrical impulses originating from the sinoatrial (SA) node. Most cases are respiratory-dependent and typically do not require treatment if mild. However, if symptoms are significant, medications such as metoprolol tartrate tablets or amiodarone hydrochloride tablets may be prescribed under medical supervision.
2. Hyperthyroidism
Excess thyroid hormone increases cardiovascular excitability and stimulation, reduces peripheral vascular resistance, and enhances myocardial contractility, which may lead to tachycardia. Treatment may include antithyroid medications such as methimazole tablets or propranolol hydrochloride tablets under a doctor's guidance. In some cases, radioactive iodine-131 therapy may be necessary.
In addition to the above common causes, an accelerated morning heart rate may also be related to other conditions such as ventricular premature beats, paroxysmal tachycardia, or ventricular tachycardia. It is recommended to maintain healthy lifestyle habits, ensure adequate rest, and get sufficient sleep. If symptoms are severe, prompt medical evaluation is advised to identify the underlying cause and receive appropriate, standardized treatment.
