Introduction
In general, ear itching after using in-ear headphones may be caused by factors such as irritation, allergic reactions, or external otitis. Besides these three common causes, it could also result from conditions like otomycosis (fungal ear infection), contact dermatitis, or external ear eczema. If any discomfort occurs, it is recommended to seek timely evaluation and diagnosis at an otorhinolaryngology (ENT) department, followed by targeted treatment based on the confirmed diagnosis.

In general, ear itching after using in-ear headphones may be caused by ear irritation, allergy, external otitis, or other reasons. A detailed analysis is as follows:

  1. Ear irritation

Prolonged use of headphones or poor-quality headphones may irritate the external auditory canal, possibly causing discomfort such as itching and pain. Usually, no special treatment is required—symptoms typically resolve after discontinuing headphone use.

  2. Allergy

If an individual is allergic to components of the headphones, a localized mucosal allergic reaction may occur, potentially leading to symptoms such as skin thickening, tinnitus, and itching. Medications such as cetirizine hydrochloride tablets or loratadine tablets may be used under medical guidance.

  3. External otitis

If headphones are exposed to the environment for extended periods, they may accumulate bacteria. Prolonged use may lead to bacterial infection and inflammation of the ear, resulting in discomfort such as pain, itching, and tinnitus. Treatment may include prescribed medications such as levofloxacin hydrochloride ear drops or ciprofloxacin hydrochloride ear drops.

Besides the above three causes, conditions such as otomycosis (fungal ear infection), contact dermatitis, or external ear eczema may also be responsible. Any persistent discomfort should be promptly evaluated in an otorhinolaryngology department for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
