PICC Removal Procedure and Precautions
Under normal circumstances, PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) is placed through a peripheral vein into the central venous system. During PICC removal, care must be taken to prevent complications such as air embolism and thrombus detachment, which may lead to pulmonary embolism and adversely affect the patient's health. The specific procedure is as follows:
1. Before removal, prepare sterile dressing supplies, hand disinfectant, scalpel, sterile dressings, bandages, and other necessary items.
2. Position the patient in a supine position with the arm containing the catheter placed below the level of the heart. Place a treatment drape over the area.
3. Loosen the securing tape by hand and slowly remove the adhesive dressing.
4. Use forceps to hold a cotton ball soaked in iodophor, and disinfect the puncture site using a clockwise motion. Repeat disinfection 2–3 times, ensuring a disinfection diameter greater than 15 cm.
5. Slowly withdraw the catheter from the insertion site. Immediately apply firm pressure on the puncture site with a sterile gauze pad for at least 20 minutes. Inspect the removed catheter for any signs of damage or breakage.
6. Finally, cover the puncture site with gauze or a sterile dressing. The procedure is now complete.
Note: Prior to PICC removal, potential risks and complications associated with the procedure should be fully explained to the patient and their family. It is recommended that the procedure be performed at a licensed medical facility by a qualified healthcare professional.
