The correct technique for palpating abdominal masses
Generally, an abdominal mass refers to an abnormal lump that can be palpated during an abdominal examination. The specific procedure is as follows:
1. The patient lies in a supine position with both lower limbs flexed, allowing the abdominal muscles to fully relax.
2. Use the single-hand palpation technique to examine the entire abdomen in an "S"-shaped pattern.
3. Once a mass is detected, begin palpating from its margins and gradually assess the entire mass. Carefully evaluate the size, borders, surface smoothness, and consistency (hardness) of the mass.
4. After recording the findings, comprehensively evaluate the patient's condition based on laboratory tests and imaging studies.
If an abdominal mass is detected during routine self-examination, it is important to promptly visit a hospital for an abdominal ultrasound to determine the underlying cause, followed by appropriate treatment based on the diagnosis.
