Introduction
It is essential to plan your schedule carefully. The examination should be scheduled during the non-menstrual period—ideally 3–7 days after menstruation ends. Avoid sexual intercourse for at least 24 hours prior to the TCT (ThinPrep Cytology Test) to prevent seminal fluid residue from interfering with test results. If you have severe vaginitis, it must be treated first; otherwise, excessive inflammatory cells in the smear may compromise the accuracy of result interpretation.

ThinPrep cytologic test (TCT), a liquid-based cervical cytology examination, is the simplest and most direct method for cervical cancer screening. Prior to undergoing TCT, several points require attention:

1. Plan your schedule carefully: The TCT examination must be performed outside of menstruation—ideally 3–7 days after menstrual bleeding has ceased.

2. Abstain from sexual intercourse for at least 24 hours prior to the TCT examination to avoid potential interference from residual semen on test results.

3. If you have severe vaginitis, treat the infection first; otherwise, excessive inflammatory cells in the cytology smear may hinder accurate interpretation of results.

4. Avoid vaginal douching or use of vaginal suppositories within 24–48 hours before the TCT examination; also refrain from pelvic examinations during this period. Avoid sitting baths the day before the test; showering is preferred. These are key preparatory considerations—please ensure proper preparation before undergoing TCT. Additionally, while TCT itself generally does not restrict sexual activity afterward, for safety reasons it is advisable to wait one week before resuming intercourse.
