Edema is common in summer.
In general, edema is more likely to occur in summer and may be caused by excessive fluid intake, allergies, benign prostatic hyperplasia (prostate enlargement), glomerulonephritis, or heart failure. It can be improved through general management, medication, and other treatments. Specific analyses are as follows:
1. Excessive fluid intake: In hot summer weather, the body tends to sweat heavily even with mild physical activity. If large amounts of water are consumed at once, fluid may accumulate in the body and fail to be excreted promptly, leading to edema. This is a normal physiological phenomenon that does not require special treatment. Symptoms can be relieved by light physical movement or massage.
2. Allergies: Seafood such as scallops and shrimp are abundant in summer. Individuals allergic to seafood may develop rashes, body swelling, and itching after consumption. Patients can take antihistamines such as loratadine tablets or cetirizine hydrochloride tablets under medical guidance.
3. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH): This may result from hormonal imbalances and can cause symptoms including urgency, painful urination, frequent urination, and difficulty urinating. After drinking fluids, urine cannot be expelled promptly, often resulting in edema. Treatment may include medications such as tamsulosin hydrochloride sustained-release capsules or Qianlieshutong capsules, used under medical supervision.
4. Glomerulonephritis: This condition is often associated with factors such as skin infections or upper respiratory tract infections and may lead to facial swelling, severe eyelid edema, and oliguria (reduced urine output). Patients may be treated with medications such as erythromycin tablets or methylprednisolone tablets under medical guidance.
5. Heart failure: This may be caused by conditions such as hypertension or coronary atherosclerotic heart disease, and can lead to symptoms including shortness of breath, dyspnea, swelling, and palpitations. Patients may use medications such as amlodipine-atorvastatin calcium tablets or bisoprolol fumarate tablets under medical supervision.
During summer, it is recommended to drink water in small amounts frequently and avoid staying in air-conditioned rooms for prolonged periods.
