What causes pain in the ribs of the back?
Generally, back rib pain may be caused by trauma, intercostal neuralgia, costochondritis, early-stage herpes zoster, gallstones, or other reasons. Specific analyses are as follows:
1. Trauma
If the ribs in the back are subjected to external impact, it may lead to local soft tissue injury, resulting in symptoms such as pain and swelling. These symptoms can be alleviated with ice packs initially; after 48 hours, heat application may help improve the condition.
2. Intercostal Neuralgia
Intercostal neuralgia refers to a syndrome characterized by band-like pain in the chest or abdomen due to damage of the intercostal nerves from various causes. Patients typically experience sharp, burning severe pain and may also develop pain in the back ribs. Medications such as carbamazepine tablets or gabapentin capsules may be used under medical guidance for treatment.
3. Costochondritis
Costochondritis is an inflammatory condition occurring in the costal cartilage, possibly caused by bacterial or viral infections. After onset, patients may exhibit redness, swelling, warmth, and pain in the affected cartilage area, and some may also experience back rib pain. Treatment may include medications such as ibuprofen sustained-release tablets or naproxen tablets, taken as directed by a physician.
4. Early-Stage Herpes Zoster
In the early stage of herpes zoster, pain in the back ribs may occur. After the incubation period, clusters of blisters will appear. It is recommended that patients visit a dermatology department for diagnosis and treatment, and take antiviral medications such as ganciclovir dispersible tablets or acyclovir dispersible tablets as prescribed.
5. Gallstones
In patients with gallstones, pain may radiate to the rib area, causing noticeable referred pain. Timely medical consultation is advised, and treatments such as extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy may be performed under medical supervision.
In addition, back rib pain could also be caused by metastatic tumors originating from other organs. Therefore, patients are advised to seek prompt medical evaluation and treatment at a hospital.
