Why do hands that have had chilblains become very swollen?
Generally, hands that have previously suffered from chilblains may become swollen due to factors such as local tissue damage, insufficient blood and qi, reduced subcutaneous fat, localized inflammation, or local tissue hyperplasia. A detailed analysis is as follows:
1. Local Tissue Damage
After developing chilblains, circulation in the fingers may be impaired, leading to inadequate oxygen supply in the finger tissues. This can result in local blood stasis and thickening of muscle tissue, causing the fingers to appear thicker. It is recommended that patients adjust their diet, avoid cold exposure, and apply local heat therapy to improve condition.
2. Insufficient Blood and Qi
Insufficient blood and qi can slow down blood circulation. In cold weather, this increases susceptibility to chilblains, gradually leading to capillary blockage. Patients are advised to perform regular hand exercises to promote blood circulation.
3. Reduced Subcutaneous Fat
Following frostbite, reduced subcutaneous fat may contribute to the appearance of thicker fingers. Patients can relieve this condition by performing daily finger massage.
4. Localized Inflammation
Excessive cold weather may cause localized skin inflammation, resulting in swollen fingers. It is recommended that patients adopt appropriate warming measures, ensure adequate rest and sufficient sleep, and wear cotton or thick gloves regularly.
5. Local Tissue Hyperplasia
Frostbite may damage soft tissues, leading to pain and swelling, as well as impaired blood circulation. Patients should follow medical advice and use medications such as Shujin Huoxue Pian (muscle-relaxing and blood-activating tablets) or Yunnan Baiyao capsules for treatment.
In addition, tissue edema, swelling, and poor venous return may also cause post-chilblain hand swelling. It is advisable to get adequate rest, maintain good nutrition, engage in moderate outdoor activities, and strengthen overall physical health. If other discomforts occur, prompt medical consultation is recommended.
