Why is sweating common after moxibustion?
Generally, excessive sweating after moxibustion may be related to normal body perspiration, a hot and stuffy environment, overly prolonged moxibustion duration, deficiency of qi and blood, or yang deficiency. Appropriate adjustments can be made based on the specific cause. The details are as follows:
1. Normal Body Perspiration
During moxibustion, an ignited moxa stick is held over the affected area to promote local blood circulation. The medicinal components in the moxa may stimulate sweat secretion in the treated area, leading to sweating after the session. This is usually normal and does not involve other discomforts. It is recommended to wipe off sweat promptly after moxibustion to avoid catching a chill.
2. Hot and Stuffy Environment
Excessive sweating during moxibustion may be due to environmental factors. Many patients undergo moxibustion in poorly ventilated or excessively warm surroundings, which can contribute to this condition. It is advisable to open windows for ventilation to improve air circulation.
3. Overly Prolonged Moxibustion Duration
If moxibustion lasts too long, it may affect blood circulation in the treated area and disrupt normal sweat regulation, potentially causing post-moxibustion sweating, cold limbs, or similar symptoms. It is recommended to keep moxibustion sessions within an appropriate duration to avoid adverse effects on health.
4. Qi and Blood Deficiency
Prolonged irritability, anger, or insufficient rest may impair the body's qi and blood circulation, slowing their flow and leading to deficiency. This may manifest as sweating after moxibustion, cold extremities, and pale complexion. Patients are advised to develop healthy habits such as regular sleep patterns and adequate nutritional intake. Under medical guidance, herbal remedies like Buzhong Yiqi Wan (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Pills) or Sijunzi Granules may be used to alleviate symptoms.
5. Yang Deficiency
Yang deficiency is another possible cause of sweating after moxibustion. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, individuals with yang deficiency have insufficient yang energy, making it difficult for the body to expel internal coldness and toxins, thus becoming prone to sweating. Moxibustion helps stimulate and gradually restore yang energy. However, if yang energy is not sufficiently enhanced, the body remains in a state of deficiency, resulting in persistent sweating. It is important to avoid staying up late, maintain a regular daily routine, and consider drinking ginger tea with brown sugar regularly.
Note: If excessive sweating or discomfort occurs during moxibustion, the procedure should be stopped immediately, and professional medical advice should be sought.
