Is lacrimal sac fistula caused by genetic factors?
In general, lacrimal fistula may be caused by genetic factors, or it could result from ocular trauma, congenital developmental abnormalities, inflammatory infections, iatrogenic causes, among others. A detailed analysis is as follows:
1. Genetic factors
A lacrimal fistula refers to an abnormal passage between the lacrimal sac and other organs or tissues. If one or both parents have congenital lacrimal fistula, it may be inherited and lead to congenital lacrimal fistula in their children.
2. Ocular trauma
If a patient suffers eye injury, it may cause local tissue damage leading to the aforementioned symptoms, possibly accompanied by decreased vision and impaired eye movement. Patients can apply local warm compresses to promote blood circulation and improve symptoms. Additionally, under medical guidance, medications such as levofloxacin eye drops or erythromycin eye ointment may be used for treatment.
3. Congenital developmental abnormalities
Congenital developmental abnormalities are mostly due to improper development of the nasolacrimal duct during embryonic stages, which may lead to lacrimal fistula. For patients with such congenital abnormalities, surgical intervention is usually recommended under medical supervision, such as dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) or lacrimal sac excision.
4. Inflammatory infection
If a patient neglects eye hygiene, allowing bacterial invasion and subsequent inflammation, the above symptoms may occur, along with redness of the eye, photophobia, and excessive tearing. Under medical guidance, patients may use medications such as tobramycin eye drops or norfloxacin eye drops for treatment.
5. Iatrogenic causes
If improper surgical technique is used during dacryocystorhinostomy, it may lead to the development of lacrimal fistula. It is recommended that patients seek timely medical attention and may undergo endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy as directed by a physician.
Besides the above, lacrimal fistula may also be caused by tumor compression. If patients experience discomfort, they should promptly visit a hospital for targeted treatment to avoid delays in managing the condition.
