Introduction
In general, itchy nipples that discharge white particles may be normal or abnormal. This condition commonly occurs in women during lactation. If the nipple is not thoroughly cleaned after breastfeeding, residual milk may accumulate and form milk crust, leading to the discharge of white particles from the nipple. Such white particles are considered a normal physiological phenomenon.
In general, itchy nipples that discharge white particles may be normal or abnormal. The specific analysis is as follows:
1. Normal
Itchy nipples discharging white particles usually occur in lactating women. If the nipple is not thoroughly cleaned after breastfeeding, residual milk can accumulate and form milk crust (milk residue), leading to the discharge of white particles from the nipple. This type of white discharge is considered a normal physiological phenomenon and does not require special treatment. It is recommended that individuals maintain good hygiene of the nipple area and gently clean the nipples with warm water after each breastfeeding session to prevent accumulation of milk crust, which, if severe, could block milk flow and potentially lead to conditions such as mastitis.
2. Abnormal
If a patient has local sebaceous gland inflammation, itchy nipples may also discharge white particles, typically due to secondary bacterial infection. In such cases, patients may apply erythromycin ointment or mupirocin ointment as directed by a physician to alleviate symptoms. Additionally, in patients with mastitis, besides discharging white particles from the nipple, the breast skin may become red, swollen, and painful. Anti-inflammatory medications such as cefixime capsules or amoxicillin capsules may be prescribed to help resolve the inflammation.
